A new BRZ? Don't get your hopes up about a production Subaru Sport Mobility Concept sports car

Subaru surprised the world with the reveal of the wildly-styled Sport Mobility Concept last week, but it could amount to little more than vapourware.

Speaking to CarsGuide at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show where the concept was revealed alongside a massive manned drone, Subaru Japan Marketing and Planning spokesperson, Yusuke Ueda, said the show car is little more than a styling exercise.

"This is strictly a design experiment concept," he said.

"The car is something Subaru wanted to express what the brand would be like in the age of electrification.

"Subaru is known for AWD capability, that car represents all-wheel drive capability as an EV."

Pouring cold water on the idea of the Sport Mobility Concept making it to production, or influencing a future iteration of the acclaimed BRZ sports car, Ueda confirmed there are no powertrain details on offer.

However, the reveal video showcased the Sport Mobility Concept travelling quickly over unsealed roads as a showcase for its all-wheel-drive capability.

"This is just a show concept car, there's no specifications at the moment, but it's all about wanting to express what Subaru will be like as an EV with capabilities in all kinds of roles and expressing the enjoyment in driving," Ueda said.

The Sport Mobility Concept features a sci-fi two-door aesthetic with squared-off wheel arches to highlight its all-paw grip.

Slender headlights, a blacked-out glasshouse, bonnet scoop and barely-there side mirrors complete the look, but whether some of these design elements finds their way to a production Subaru like the Crosstrek, Forester or Outback still remains to be seen.
