Mazda mass recall: 2013-2020 Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-3 recalled, with more than 176,000 cars affected

A massive recall of more than 176,000 Mazdas has been announced, with two of the brand’s most familiar nameplates affected.

Model years between 2013 and 2020 for the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-3, which covers two generations of the former and one of the latter, have been recalled for a potential wiring problem which could affect the reversing camera’s function.

In total, 176,048 Mazda3 and CX-3 cars could potentially be affected by the wiring issue.

While it’s unlikely the defect will affect all, or even most of the cars involved, the Department of Infrastructure website, which publishes vehicle recalls says “the rear-view camera wiring harness may become damaged and could cause the rear-view image to become distorted or flicker.”

Of course, this has potential safety implications when reversing, as most drivers of modern cars would rely heavily on a working camera and display.

“If the rear-view camera display does not clearly display the rear-view image as intended, it could increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to any persons located behind the vehicle.”

In total, 176,048 Mazda3 and CX-3 cars could potentially be affected by the wiring issue which could affect the reversing camera’s function.

The notice says that Mazda will contact owners “when parts become available… requesting they make an appointment at their preferred Mazda Authorised Dealership to have the work carried out free of charge.”

Given the sheer number of cars affected by the recall, it’s likely the process will take some time.

Owners can check their own car’s VIN against the lists published by the government department at the Recalls website.
