Following its Australian launch in May this year the Amarok 4x4 has proved a popular addition to Volkswagen's local line-up with year-on-year sales for the premium dual-cab ute up no less than 43 per cent to the end of October.
Now, a relatively small but still significant number of them (70 units) is the subject of a national recall campaign relating to a manufacturing defect which may cause a front drive shaft to "become damaged and break".
According to a notice issued by the Federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts, a drive shaft breakage could lead to a "sudden loss of motive power".

In a worst-case scenario the department says, a "sudden loss of motive power whilst driving could increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to the vehicle occupants and/or other road users."
Owners can reference their Amarok's Vehicle Identification Number against a list of affected cars at https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-005829.
Affected owners are advised to contact their preferred Volkswagen dealership to have their vehicle inspected and rectified free-of-charge.
