The massive GMC Yukon SUV has been the United States President's transport of choice, not to mention the Secret Service supporting him. And now General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) has announced the mega SUV will hit Australian roads as a factory OEM model.
The full-sized eight-seater Yukon SUV will arrive in Australia in the top grade Denali and will be re-manufacturerd for right-hand drive by GMSV’s partner Premoso in Melbourne’s Dandenong.
“GMSV has made a real impression in the local market and, thanks to this success, we’ve been able to make a strong business case for additional models and this latest arrival is testament to these achievements,” GMSV’s Director Greg Rowe said.
“I’m excited to confirm the new GMC Yukon, will be remanufactured here in Melbourne and will be available in Australia and New Zealand.
“The GMSV journey started in November 2020 with the launch of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, together with the announcement of the very first manufactured right-hand drive Corvette, the C8,” said Mr Rowe.
“The popularity of GMSV and the vehicles we sell through our network has grown substantially in a few short years and this success was what inspired us to investigate the possibility of adding an all-new model to the line-up.”
Measuring 5.3m end-to-end and with a wheelbase of more than three metres the Yukon is available in the US with a 6.2-litre petrol V8 engine making 308kW or an in-line six producing 204kW.
CarsGuide reached out to GMSV to ask which engine will be coming to Australia. “We’re getting the V8,” Head of GMSV’s Communications Ed Finn said, adding Australia and New Zealand will be getting the 2025 version of the Yukon.
The current Yukon in the top of-the-range Denali grade comes standard with a mountain of features including 20-inch alloys wheels, leather upholstery with teak trim, there’s a 14-speaker Bose sound system, 15-inch head-up display, a 10.2-inch media screen with wireless apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front and second row seats and wireless phone charging.
Famed for its mammoth size, in the US the GMC Yukon has been used by Federal agencies such as the Secret Service and also by past presidents.
While pricing for the Australian 2025 Yukon has yet to be announced, in the US the four-wheel drive version is powered by the 6.2-litre V8 in the Denali grade and lists for US$79,700 (A$125,285).
With the cost of importing, exchange rates and then the remanufacturing process GMSV’s cars don’t come cheap. The GMSV Silverado starts from $128,000 while the Corvette begins at $175,000.
