The Range Rover can be credited with inventing the luxury 4x4 movement when the British-built wagon was launched in 1970, though it started life as a much more utilitarian two-door off-roader.
Morphing into a luxury four-door by 1981, the Rangie has survived and prospered through several changes of ownership and three generations to become one of the world's most recognised status symbols. Current prices range from $226,806 for the Range Rover D300 SE SWB (221KW) to $430,520 for the Range Rover P615 SV LWB (452KW).
It extended its brand footprint with the launch of the smaller, more powerful Range Rover Sport in 2004, and followed it with the Victoria Beckham-'designed' compact Evoque in 2011. Now owned by Jaguar owners Tata, the Range Rover is more popular than ever.
