Everyone enjoys the luxury of a car with a silky-smooth ride and luxurious comfort, but some people appreciate it even more than others. People who love a long road trip for starters, but also those of a certain age, where the level of comfort can make or break a driving holiday.
For 79-year-old Sydney retiree Michael Connery, who likes nothing more than to tow his caravan around Australia for holidays - as well as some occasional off-roading - the Subaru Outback is the one car that covers all of his needs, and then some. "I've had a lot of cars over the years, and I mean a lot, it's one of my weaknesses!" Michael laughs. "I've tried most of them, and I'd have to say the Subaru Outback is the best car I've ever had - it leaves the rest for dead.
"I have a bit of arthritis and the usual aches and pains and I've found the Outback really travels like a limousine on the road - it's extremely comfortable. "Also, the seats are heated, the steering wheel is heated, and for an old boy like me, it's a godsend on an early morning. I think it's just excellent.
"I can also still go down little dirt tracks - I love fishing and I travel along tracks that you certainly wouldn't be able to drive on in a typical two-wheel-drive. You don't feel the bumps in the Outback. It really gives me the best of both worlds."
Michael is also particularly enamored with the car's high-tech safety features.
"Adaptive Cruise Control and the Autonomous Emergency Braking are great, and I love how when you reverse, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert give you a warning if there's another vehicle approaching behind you," he says. "The safety features are just quite remarkable, and it means you can relax more when you drive."
Ken McMullen, 36, a father of two from the Gold Coast, also says the Outback's numerous safety features are what drew him to it. "I've got a young family, so that was important to me. I think Subaru has been ahead of the game with safety features for a while," he says.
As someone who enjoys camping with his family, Ken says that having a car with excellent off-road capability was also crucial. "That's one of the big reasons I got it, because it has that off-road capability without being a big, heavy four-wheel-drive," he says.
"Having the comfort of a normal car, but with the extra all-wheel-drive capabilities to be able to go off-roading really, really helps. Plus it's got the space inside for us all and the dog, and all the camping gear. So yeah, it's perfect."
The comfort of the Outback, Ken says, is something that has continues to surprise him.
"It's just such a comfortable and smooth car to drive," he says. "I've had plenty of other cars and four-wheel-drives in my time and nothing, nothing can match the comfort I get in the Outback."
