Locked in! 2024 Suzuki Swift confirmed for Australia as Kia Rio, VW Polo and Toyota Yaris hybrid rival

The new 2024 Swift looks an awful lot like the concept Suzuki took to the Japan Mobility Show.

The 2024 Suzuki Swift has been confirmed as, essentially, the model the brand brought to the recent 2023 Japan Mobility Show as a concept.

With a new drivetrain and updated styling, it isn’t a ‘ground-up’ totally new model, but electrification and new tech make it a little more than the ‘budget’ hatchback Australians may know it as.

And the little hatch has been officially conformed for an Australian launch by the brand's local arm.

Suzuki Australia has not confirmed timing, specification or model grades but that will be revealed closer to launch in 2024.

While the current Australian-spec Swift is available with a trio of engine choices depending on grade - a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder, a 1.0-litre turbo unit, or a 1.4-litre turbo in the Swift Sport - the new version comes with a “newly developed” 1.2-litre unit with a mild-hybrid system.

Mated to a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), the mild-hybrid engine is so because of a generator mounted in the drivetrain that is “used to assist the engine” and, Suzuki says, makes it more efficient.

According to the Japanese website, a non-hybrid variant that appears to be a base model will also be available and, though it’s not confirmed, it’s likely to run the existing version of the 1.2-litre three.

New tech comes along with the updated hatch too, including a 9.0-inch multimedia screen as the headliner for a facelifted interior layout.
