Toyota has announced a recall for a large group of Corolla Cross small SUVs affected by a defect which could result in the car rolling away when parked.
The Corolla Cross models, of which there are 1285 affected and 962 of those in customer hands, were built between February 2022 and April 2023, are limited to the non-hybrid petrol-powered variants.
Toyota supplies a detailed explanation of what is essentially a potential failure of the parking brake engaging.
“For involved vehicles, there is a possibility that the brake actuator assembly may falsely detect an overcurrent condition of the electronic parking brake (EPB) actuator and enter a failsafe mode," Toyota said in a statement.
“This mode illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), displays the message "Parking Brake Malfunction, Visit Your Dealer" on the multi-information display (MID), and prevents the EPB from being engaged or disengaged.
“If the EPB cannot be engaged, and the EPB MIL and MID warnings are ignored, and the vehicle is parked on an incline or decline without being placed into "Park", then the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Toyota specified the reason the hybrid model isn’t involved in the recall comes down to it “not using the same control program because the manufacturer of the brake ECU is different”.
Toyota has announced a recall for a large group of Corolla Cross small SUVs.
To have the defect fixed, Toyota says its dealer network will “update the skid control electronic control unit (ECU) software free of charge to vehicle owners”.
“Toyota Australia will provide all owners of involved vehicles details of this safetyrecall campaign by SMS, email and/or mail to their last known address," it added.
“Customers are asked to keep their contact details up to date with Toyota so future communications can be received.”
Owners should check their Corolla Cross’ VIN, with those sequentially between 0J000003 and 0J001343 affected.
