It's amazing what you can pick up on a worksite, with Australia's army of tradies constantly swapping tips, tricks and advice as they go about their working day.
It's not just about work stuff, either. The modern tradie is every bit as knowledgable about health, fitness and accounting as they are about tools, timber and paints.
And so, with the help of the Ford Australia, we are tapping into this vast wealth of worksite knowledge to bring you the best advice from some of the most successful tradies in the country.
We call them Tradie Tips, and this week we're catching up with Thelston Grenville from Emmerson's Rendering in Melbourne. Thelston is a master when it comes to the perfect finish on his projects. But he's also a master at social media, which is where he says he now gets 90 percent of his bookings.
Mind Mechanics: Should meditation and mindfulness should be in your tool box?
I'm a huge believer in mindfulness - I use it for motivation. Every day I get to site about 20 minutes early, and I spend some time just focusing on the tasks ahead of me that day. It helps me stay focused, motivated, and gives me the best chance of success.
Driving – you drive every day, what's your behind-the-wheel ritual?
In the morning it's all about the podcasts. It's a mix of sport, business and motivation podcasts, and I find I'm always learning something new. I also just love driving my Ford Ranger XLT. It's my first 4WD vehicle that I've owned, and I love it!
Boring but important: How do you handle the tax stuff for your business?
As the business grows, you need to keep upgrading the personnel that you use. My accountant is lifesaver. I pay him whatever he asks and he's worth every penny. It's always good to understand the bookkeeping side of how your business works, but you really need to pay a professional that can do their job expertly, which allows you to do yours.
What about insurance? What's the best approach?
In this day and age the right insurance is so important. I have probably over-insured myself and my business, but what I'm really buying is peace of mind. Again, find an expert for advice, and get the right coverage.
What's your most important tool?
For me, it's all about the storage of all of my tools. I've built a shed, and in fact just extended it again, just to keep them all safe, and I've got some accessories in my Ranger to help me carry what I need.
How technology is changing the workplace?
Social media has changed my business dramatically. At this point, 90 percent of my jobs come from social media, whether it's me posting my work, or other builders seeking me out. That's one aspect that's been so important for me. But if you're going to use it to showcase your work, then be honest and genuine. Show everything, not just the highlight reel. That way people get a real idea of who you are as a person.
What about time off? Do you take holidays?
Holidays are non-negotiable for me. I tend to take them at the end of the year when most people are taking a break, so I can properly relax. You need that downtime physically and mentally to recuperate. You need to be running at optimum levels, which means taking time off to recover.
What about health and fitness?
I go to the gym at least a few days every week, and I play sport. Remember, your body is how you make money, so you've got to keep it in good condition. I always try to eat well too, and sleep is so important.
How do you know when to take on an apprentice?
Simple. When you know you'll have time to teach them. It's extremely important to only do it when you have the time to commit to them. You're shaping their skills, and their lives, so if you don't have time, then don't do it.
Mobile workshop: How have you accessorised your Ranger?
I've put roof racks on top, so I can bring my own special ladders with me. And I've got these specific mats in the tray where I can put my render buckets on so they don't slide around. And I've got a new toolbox for all my small tools. It means when I take my Ranger to work, it's all there for me and easy.
